NHD District, State and National Contests Update
National History Day in Iowa is dedicated to creating an opportunity for students to showcase their work, get feedback and be recognized within the limitations we have – but first and foremost, we want to keep all NHD Iowa participants safe. Due to the changing nature of the COVID-19 situation, seven district contests, the state contestand the national contestwere all moved to a virtual format.

The National History Day program includes a progressive contest cycle open to students in grades 6-12 beginning with the district contests in February/March, state contest in April/May and national contest in June.
Generally, the top two entries in a category advance to the next level of competition. Students in 6th-8th grades participate in the junior division; students in 9th-12th grades participate in the senior division. Participants may work individually or collaboratively in groups of two to five. Students in 4th and 5th grade may participate in a non-competitive youth division.
District Contests
To qualify for the state contest, you must first compete in one of the district contests across the state. District contests are typically held in February or March. View the calendar for a list of dates and locations.
State Contest
Winners from district contests advance to the state contest and compete for the chance to advance to the National History Day Contest.
National Contest
The National History Day Contest is the final stage of a series of contests at the district and state levels. Every year more than 3,000 students from around the world advance to the national contest.
