Historic & Archaeological Site Inventory

Have you ever wondered what the story was behind a building on your community's main street or are you interested in researching a property to nominate it for the National Register of Historic Places? The State Historical Society of Iowa maintains a substantial collection of information about Iowa’s historic and archeological sites.

The majority of the collection, including the Iowa Site Inventory, Historic/Architectural Database and National Archaeological Database, is available to the public in-person at the State Historic Preservation Office in Des Moines.

Some portions of the collection are available online including the National Register of Historic Places nomination forms and photographs and more than 3,000 historic sites can be found on the Iowa Culture app.
