Iowa Governor and U.S. Senator Harold E. Hughes was a charismatic politician who changed government and politics during tumultuous times here in the Hawkeye State and throughout the nation. A transitional governor in the 1960s, he rose from the depths of alcoholism to lead Iowa through controversies about liquor by the drink, legislative reapportionment, Amish schools and racial tensions. As senator, Hughes spoke out against the Vietnam War and helped uncover illegal bombing in Indochina.
