Over the years, Iowans have established many communal societies to create their own version of utopia. During this "Iowa Stories" online presentation, Dr. Peter Hoehnle will discuss some of the well-known and not-so-well-known communities, including the Amana Colonies, Clydesdale Colony, Communia, Icarian Colonies, Iowa Pioneer Phalanx and Salubria. The talk also will explore how broader communal movements in American history influenced community builders on the Iowa frontier.
Dr. Hoehnle is an Amana native who earned graduate degrees at Iowa State University, where we was the last graduate student of the late Dr. Dorothy Schwieder. He has published widely on American communal societies, edited the journal Communal Societies, and served as president of the Communal Studies Association. He is also a recipient of the Throne Aldrich Award from the State Historical Society of Iowa.
