A companion to the exhibit Living Proof: Visualization of Hope on display from Sept 9 - Dec. 31, this lecture will include information on the art therapy profession, such as education and training requirements for entry into the field, scope of practice, and specific examples of how art therapy is used with a variety of populations, including those affected by cancer. An overview of art therapy in Iowa will provide attendees with specific examples of how art therapy is being practiced locally, and throughout the state. Images and case examples of client artwork will be used to illustrate the art therapy process. Self-help through art will be discussed with tips for ways to experience the relaxing benefits of creating on your own. Additionally, participants will be invited to create a "Notes of Hope" notecard. Stamps, ink, and colored pencils will be available for participants to use to design a card that will then be given to cancer patients. Funding for this lecture and project has been provided by the Iowa Arts Council and Living Proof Exhibit.
