The State Historical Society of Iowa’s historical markers raise awareness of Iowa’s rich cultural history and connect people to the places and points of pride that make the state unique. Markers often are encountered spontaneously while traveling across the state, creating unexpected and real connections with a place and its history.
Historical Markers Grant Program
In commemoration of Iowa’s 175th anniversary of statehood, the State Historical Society, with support from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, has established a grant program to allow individuals and organizations to erect their own historical markers that will tell the story of the people and places that have shaped the land now known as the State of Iowa with a priority on highlighting stories of historically underrepresented groups.
Grants of up to $2,000 per marker will be available for the manufacture of a 24” x 36” cast aluminum historical marker. For grant program details and more information see grant page!
